Pre-Concert Lecture for Sept. 14th Ocean City Pops
“Can-cans and Confections from Swanky Paris and Spicy Vienna”

Karl Middleman, accomplished conductor and lecturer, will be giving a special pre-concert talk at the Music Pier on Wednesday, Sept. 14th, prior to the evening’s Ocean City Pops Orchestra concert titled “From Paris to Vienna.”
Mr. Middleman’s talk, titled “Can-cans and Confections from Swanky Paris and Spicy Vienna” will begin promptly at 6:45 pm in the Music Pier auditorium (back portion) Solarium.
Mr. Middleman is the Artistic Director of the Philadelphia Classical Symphony.
Pre-Concert Lecture
Known as an extremely versatile musician, Karl Middleman is familiar to classical music audiences as a conductor of many orchestras and choirs.
A career educator, he has served on the faculties of Arcadia University, Cabrini, Philadelphia and Montgomery County Community Colleges. Currently Mr. Middleman teaches at Temple University. Recently he served as Arts Advocate and Trainer for the "Classroom Arts Project" of Partners in Distance Learning, as well as Scholar in Residence for the South Jersey and Philadelphia Jewish Comunity Centers.
He is currently a Commonwealth Speaker for the Pennsylvania Humanities Council. Middleman's "Dvorak in America," television program for PHC will be broadcast on Pennsylvania Cable Network in December 2011.
Mr. Middleman is a regular workshop leader for Pendle Hill Retreat Center where he teaches courses on music and aesthetics.
He is a recipient of many awards from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Pew Center for Arts and Heritage and the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts. His artistry has been recently cited in 19th Century Music and Philadelphia Magazine, from which his work with the Classical Symphony was twice awarded Best in Philly.
Mr. Middleman initiated a series of legendary concerts in 1994, with the Philadelphia Classical Symphony, mixing scholarship with showmanship. His thematic concerts with that ensemble are noted for their spirited intellectual inquiry and for the bold, revelatory ways they reframe the essential classical music experience for seasoned as well as novice listeners.

This pre-concert event is being presented by the Friends of the Ocean City Pops and will be open to all attendees for that night’s concert. For additional information about the lecture, please contact the Ocean City Pops office number 525-9248, Ext 13.

The Pops Concert on Sept. 14th will begin at 7:30 pm and will feature singer soloists Chloe Moore and Marcus Beam. Featured composers will include Johann Strauss, Jr & Sr, Lehar, Saint-Saens, Offenbach and Chopin. Also, various musicians from within the orchestra will be featured with solos by Steve Heitzer, trumpet and Patricia Daniels cellist.

The performance is in memory of Frank Ruggieri, former conductor of the orchestra.
Attendees are invited to attend a post-concert reception, to be held in the rear of the Music Pier, sponsored by Frank and Kay Manco (Mack and Manco Pizza).
