   With support from the civic leaders, the Friends of the Ocean City Pops, Inc., has launched a major fundraising campaign - the Scheible Encore Society - in honor of William Scheible's 25 years of distinguished leadership as music director of the famed orchestra.

The society will seek annual memberships to provide funds in four areas:

    1.) Expanding the Pops' outreach program to area young people. Last May, the Friends sponsored a competition for students from regional public and private high schools, and recently awarded its first two scholarships to local music students. Pops orchestra members also teach master classes in area schools

     2.) Acquiring new music scores and arrangements. These are vital and costly tools for any orchestra. Funding also will give the Pops and opportunity to commission composers to create new works

     3.) Broadening awareness of the Pops' artistry. This will include showcasing the orchestra in regional venues and out of state. Other opportunities will be the release and distribution of new DVDs and music CDs as well as augmented marketing, public relations and advertising

     4.) Increasing the Friends endowment to guarantee future support for the Pops, including endowed chairs to bring musicians to perform with the orchestra 

The campaign chairperson of the Scheible Encore Society is well-known Ocean City resident Jane Friel, assisted by a distinguished panel of honorary chairs: former Ocean City Mayor Roy Gillian and his wife, Pat; former U.S. Ambassador to Panama and U.S. Representative Bill Hughes and his wife, Nancy; and Richard Kull, of the Ocean City Tabernacle executive committee and president of the Burns-Kull Auto Group, and his wife, Mary Anne.

In addition, members of the Friends will be contacting individuals who wish to become annual members at four different levels of opportunity: Bronze, $250; Silver, $500; Gold, $1,000; and Platinum, $2,000 and above.
